In short: most problems clients experience between appointments trace back to a handful of avoidable habits — not the extensions themselves. Washing incorrectly, sleeping on wet or loose hair, using the wrong products, and skipping heat protection are the ones we see most often.

Small Habits, Real Consequences

After 15+ years of fitting and maintaining extensions, we can usually tell within minutes of a maintenance appointment which of these habits a client has fallen into — and they're all avoidable.

Mistake 1: Sleeping on Wet or Loose Hair

Wet hair tangles and mats far more easily around bonds and attachment points. A loose, low plait and a silk or satin pillowcase make a genuine difference overnight.

Mistake 2: Washing Too Often, or the Wrong Way

Washing more than 2–3 times a week strips natural oils and can weaken bonds faster than necessary. Scrubbing in circles or piling hair on top of the head while washing is one of the most common causes of matting near the roots.

Mistake 3: Using the Wrong Products

Sulphate shampoos and oil-based products applied near bonds or weft attachments can weaken keratin bonds and cause slipping. A sulphate-free shampoo and a conditioner applied from mid-lengths down only is the safer routine.

Mistake 4: Skipping Heat Protectant

Heat styling is fine with extensions in, but only with a protectant spray every time and tools kept below 180°C, avoiding direct contact with bonds or attachment points.

Mistake 5: Ignoring the First 48 Hours

The period immediately after fitting is when bonds are setting and wefts are settling. Tying hair up tightly, heat styling, or washing within the first 48 hours is one of the most common — and most avoidable — causes of early problems.

Where to Go for the Full Routine

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dry shampoo safe to use with extensions?

A light amount is fine, but heavy build-up at the root or near bonds can cause issues over time. Brush through thoroughly after use.

Can I use regular conditioner on my extensions?

Apply conditioner from mid-lengths down only — avoid the root area and any bonds or weft attachments, where oil-based products can loosen keratin.

What should I do if my extensions feel tangled at the bonds?

Some adjustment is normal in the first week. If it persists, it's usually down to brushing frequency or product build-up — contact us and we'll help you fix it before your next appointment.
